Authentic 1856 Victorian engraving, depicting one of the most celebrated events in 19th-century agricultural history: the legendary Durham Shorthorn bull called "Master Butterfly," who took First Prize (£30) at the 1856 show before selling for an astronomical, record-breaking 1,200 guineas (£1,260) at “The Royal Agricultural Society's Show, at Chelmsford.”
This is a genuine Victorian July 26, 1856 print, not a reproduction. Meticulously hand coloured with delicate watercolour washes.
The back of the frame features the original 1856 newspaper text clipping documenting the event, alongside the label identifying the wealthy buyer: Mr. J.G. Ware of Geelong, Australia. Mr. Ware famously bought Master Butterfly at this show and shipped him to Victoria, Australia. Illustrative work by the prominent English artist Harrison William Weir, engraved by Smyth (Smyth Sc.). Framed and ready to hang.
