Antique ‘Britannia’ Cast Iron Pub Table – G. Jones & Co. (Bristol) & E.E. Smith (Leicester)
A fantastic piece of British hospitality history, this authentic vintage pub table features an incredible, well-documented heritage story spanning two historic English manufacturing firms.
The heavy, three-legged cast iron base is cast in the highly collectible ‘Britannia’ style, featuring beautiful figural reliefs of Britannia complete with her classical helmet and Union Jack shield. The lower decorative tier shelf is clearly stamped: "G. Jones & Co Ltd Makers, 70 Castle St Bristol". Because Castle Street was completely destroyed in the 1940 Bristol Blitz bombing raids, this foundry mark safely dates the cast iron base to the pre-WWII era (late Victorian to early 20th century).
The solid wood tabletop (which is scratched) features its original, intact maker’s label reading: "E.E. Smith (Barfitters) Ltd, Leicester England". E.E. Smith (founded 1897) likely supplied and fitted this fresh wooden top during a mid-century pub refurbishment, perfectly marrying the historic Bristol ironwork with mid-20th-century Leicester craftsmanship.
